Enable SSH on vCenter Server Applience and ESXi hosts

Hi Everyone! In this post i will discribe easy task how to enable SSH on vCenter Server Applience (VCSA) and on each ESXi Host individually.

Enable SSH on ESXi Host

There are 3 ways to enable SSH on ESXi host:

Via Web Interface:

There are 2 ways you can login to your server via vSphere Client or via web

  1. Connect to your ESXi host https://ESXiHostNameOrIP/uiSSH_Enable01
  2. Press Actions and choose Enable SSHSSH_Enable02
  3. When SSH is enabled you will se the message that you have to disable it as soon as you done required tasks, as it is not good for securitySSH_Enable03

Via vSphere Client:

  1. Start your vSphere Client and login to host directlySSH_Enable04
  2. Go to Configuration tab, choose Security Profile press PropertiesSSH_Enable05
  3. Find SSH and press OptionsSSH_Enable06
  4. Use Manual start and stop (dont forget to turn it off as soon as you are done with your tasks) and press STARTSSH_Enable07

Via DCUI (Direct Console User Interface)

  1. Login to DCUI (directly to server i.e ILO, DellRAC etc. or direct to the server)SSH_Enable08
  2. Go to Troubleshooting OptionsSSH_Enable09
  3. Choose Enable SSH (in the right side you can see that it is written that SSH is disabled)SSH_Enable10
  4. When you Enable it you can see that the text is changed (Left side Disable SSH and right side SSH is enabled)SSH_Enable11

Enable SSH on vCenter Server Applience

Via Web Interface:

  1. Connect to your vCenter Applience https://vCenterNameOrIP/vsphere-clientSSH_Enable12
  2. Press System Configuration under AdministrationSSH_Enable13
  3. Choose Objects then right-click on your vCenter and press Edit SettingsSSH_Enable14
  4. In Access menu click checkbox Enable SSH LoginSSH_Enable15

Via DCUI (looks the same as direct to ESXi host but blue color instead of yellow)

  1. Press F2 and login to DCUISSH_Enable16
  2. Go to Troubleshooting Mode OptionsSSH_Enable17
  3. Choose Enable SSH (in the right side you can see that it is written that SSH is disabled)SSH_Enable18
  4. When you Enable it you can see that the text is changed (Left side Disable SSH and right side SSH is enabled)SSH_Enable19
